Air Jordan 5 Retro 'Anthracite' Releases February 6th

Chelsie Rendon

Since its original release in 1990, the Air Jordan 5 cultivated the way in basketball shoes by creating unique elements that are now commonly seen in newer models. Being the first Jordan model of the 90s, designer and artist Tinker Hatfield drew inspiration from World  War II fighter jets that championed a shark paint job. The shark’s aggressive teeth design resembles the rubber sole detailing contributing to the 5’s signature aesthetic. During Jordan’s signature game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, he went on to score 69 points, his all time personal best, wearing the iconic 5 ‘Fire Red.’ After this personal accomplishment, MJ also received his fourth NBA scoring title within the same year as the 5. Since this iconic game, the 5 has gone down in history as one of the most memorable Jordan silhouettes.

The sneaker also introduced new styles to the footwear scene. Reflective detailing was only found within running shoes, but the AJ5 was the first shoe other than running that included this detailing. When Michael Jordan wore the sneakers on the court his athleticism shined with every step drawing even more attention to his agility. Other elements that we don’t realize that started with the fifth model also includes translucent soles and locked lacing. It is common to see translucent rubber nowadays but in the 90s  it was riveting technology that truly changed the idea of a rubber sole. As for the lock lace, it provided an easier way to keep laces together and took the worry off of athletes as they didn’t need to keep tying their shoelaces.

To kick-off February, the newest colorway for the Air Jordan 5 Retro is releasing titled ‘Anthracite.’ The dark colorway comes complete with grey overlays and signature reflective detailing. Reverting to its classic composition, the silhouette is fined-tuned with new mesh construction replacing its usual synthetic leather fabrication. Suede overlays and stitched detailing decorates the upper while traditional branding can be spotted on the side panels and tongue. A padded ankle collar contributes to its secure and protective construction during times of wear. Classic stand-out pieces include the translucent adjustable lace clip, the see-through rubber outsole, and zig-zag shark decorum. An exposed air bubble is seen along the rubber sole emphasizing its cushioning with each step.
