Celebrating 30 years of Air Jordan 5’s | Air Jordan 5 Top 3 Releases 6/20

The year 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the iconic Air Jordan 5. The Air Jordan 5 silhouette originally released during Michael Jordan’s 1989-1990 season with Jordan on fire on the court and the Jordan Brand on fire off the court. The most memorable game from that iconic season was when Jordan set a personal record for most points per game when he scored 69 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers. During the regular season, Jordan also hit 92 three-pointers versus only 68 three-pointers in all previous seasons combined. It’s clear that Jordan was getting better and better every year, taking the basketball world by storm. With this same energy, the Jordan Brand released the Air Jordan 5 that resembled Jordan’s iconic fearless-ness on the court. Since the introduction of the Air Jordan 5, the silhouette has gone to be an instant classic with all generations.

The Air Jordan 5 silhouette released in February 1990 created by iconic designer Tinker Hatfield and was the 3rd Jordan sneaker that he designed. Hatfield took inspiration for the 5’s from Jordan’s signature style and American World War 2 fighter planes. The iconic silhouette features shark-tooth shapes on the midsole inspired by these fighter planes with a reflective 3M tongue, clear outsole and mesh netting. Hatfield’s intention for the 3M reflective tongue was to bring attention to the shoe as camera flashes went off from photographers trying to take photos of Jordan. Paired with a clear outsole, the shoe embodies a fierce resemblance to the G.O.A.T. Jordan himself. This silhouette also marks a huge milestone in the Jordan Brand history as it was the first Air Jordan to have a translucent rubber sole.

The silhouette originally released in 4 different colorways, three OG colorways and one player exclusive. ‘Metallic Silver,’ ‘New Emerald’ and ‘White/Fire Red-Black’ were the three OG colors with a ‘White/Black - Fire Red’ color as the player exclusive. The Fire Red player exclusive was originally the only sneaker that featured an embroidered 23 on the heel. Now almost all 5 silhouettes have number 23 embroidered on them.

The 5 “Retro-ed” for the first back in 2000 and were the first Air Jordan Retro for the millennium. The AJ5 has released in over 20+ different colorways and continues to be one of the most memorable and popular silhouettes in the Air Jordan line-up.

With a slight delay, the Air Jordan 5 ‘Top 3’ is set to release Saturday, June 20 and pulls inspiration from the top 3 iconic models in the past, ‘Grape,’ ‘Black Metallic’ and ‘Fire Red.’ The shoe brings it back to one of the original 1990 models with its grape tongue, Fire Red midsole, number 23 branding and a predominantly black-colored base from the iconic ‘Metallic Silver’ model. The Air Jordan 5 ‘Top 3’ will release in a full family pack like many of the Retro’s that have dropped this year.
