Chinatown Market x Converse x NBA Collaboration Releases March 12th

Chelsie Rendon

With the most recent events of All-Star Weekend, the celebration continues as an iconic trio has teamed up to honor the French designer and artist, Jeff Hamilton. Chinatown Market, Converse, and the NBA have joined forces to design iconic silhouettes paying homage to the leather jackets given to championship-winning teams: the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. The collection will contain two versions of the Pro-Leather and Chuck 70 models. The silhouettes will be reminiscent of the legendary 3-peat winnings of both teams. In particular, the Bull’s themed sneakers will highlight the 1996-1998 three-peat with Michael Jordan and the Laker’s sneakers will pay homage to the 2000-2002 championships with Kobe Bryant.

Jeff Hamilton was born and raised in Paris but always had a passion for basketball as he remembered putting up posters of his favorite players upon his walls as a kid. Since 1983, Hamilton ventured into the avenues of art and fashion. He was rising within the industry as he introduced Guess? For Men to the world. But he ultimately decided to work towards his love for fashion and basketball. Over the years, Jeff Hamilton became synonymous with his iconic championship leather jackets. Initially starting with Michael Jordan, Hamilton would soon gain popularity as people would also want an exclusively designed piece. Eventually obtaining licenses for companies including the NFL, NBA, and Disney- he started to make premium constructed silhouettes with a very limited supply. Every logo and fabric is cut and sewn by hand which contributes to its 60 day construction period. Hamilton cares about his work so much that his pieces eventually became art. So in 1997, he was able to open up a gallery dedicated to his intricate artistry. His work includes special designs for Bill Clinton, Mike Tyson, and hip-hop artists including Cam’ron. But it was his dedication towards Michael Jordan and the NBA that helped solidify his name within the fashion industry.

Honoring the Bull’s accomplishments, the Pro-Leather and Chuck 70 are seen in the distinct rich red colorway. Whereas the Laker Pro-Leather model is met with the team’s purple and the Chuck 70 is dressed in a baby blue. All four silhouettes are designed with a combination of embroidered, stitched, printed, and embossed motifs all referring to the team’s legendary winning. The maxed-out colors and exaggerated graphics stick true to Hamilton’s iconic designs as he utilizes a retro aesthetic during its construction. Premium materials are utilized within its design including quality leathers within the upper and tongues. The bold patterns and bright colors of the shoes are unmistakable statement pieces that will be anticipated within varying fashion communities.
